This year at NRC Technology Teacher Janette Selino and STEAM Art PIR Triada Samaras are collaborating on a number of STEAM Projects for Ms. Selino's two, daily STEAM
enrichment classes.

Ms. Selino with coaching from Ms. Samaras is using questions from Bloom's Taxonomy and the different levels of questions to help students think critically and problem-solve on their own.  So far, students have been using a pre-coding game and a programmable robot.
Above:  Students learn to play a wordless pre-coding game and brainstorm their ideas for a version of their own.
It takes time for students to problem-solve and learn to use new materials collaboratively.
Students are enamored with the two small robots and and look forward each day to learning more of their capabilities.  They are envisioning what their own robot might look like if they could manufacture it themselves.

Dr. An's visit focused on the Geraldine Dodge STEAM Grant at NRC adding new initiatives for the 2018-2019 academic year. This year Dr. An would like to focus on STEAM and/or Arts Integration in the Science/Art Classrooms. Dr. An envisions science and art teachers working collaboratively in a fashion that will add research data to her on-going research in this area.

Art teacher Ms. Aramayo, Science teachers Ms. Abaza and Mr. Chase, Technology teachers Ms. Selino and WPU PIR's Triada Samaras (STEAM Art PIR) and Betsy Golden (PIR) all gathered together with Dr. An to brainstorm (see images above).

Students proudly display their Arts Integration project, a roller coaster combining methods from both science and art, at NRC in Science Teacher Ms. Post's class.

Ms. Browne, Science Teacher at Don Bosco School (another Dodge funded STEAM School) used Art Integration (methods from both Science and Art) to teach her non-English speaking class of 8th graders (refugees from Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico) about cells.

STEAM projects at School 9!

Recently at School 9 in Paterson:

Students in 7th and 8th graders worked on making mandalas out of old CD’s. Using the concept of the circle in Hinduism and Buddhism students created radial symmetry with Mrs Sandler, PIR from William Paterson and art teacher Mrs Dailey.

Also at School 9 in Paterson:
Students from kindergarten thru third grade worked on a group mural using recycled styrofoam and crayons. The mural is on permanent display in our art gallery.  The concepts involved using straight lines, circles and squares in a variety of designs.
