Above: Images from the new "Grand Art Hall" created by ART PIR Triada Samaras with "Cities of the Future" student works done in Marilyn Simon's classes
SOIT students, Art Teacher Marilyn Simon, WPU Art PIR Triada Samaras, and WPU practicum teachers worked collaboratively to transform what had been a drab and dark hallway into a vibrant and welcoming new art and school news space with new overhead track lighting. Principal Vivian Gaines added track lighting to these new exhibition areas. Dodge Grant Coordinator and Math/Science PIR, Dina Scacchetti printed an excerpt of Ms. Simon's lesson plan on the discovery of perspective to hang with the artworks.
This area is now regularly frequented by students, teachers and guests alike. Visitors can view the remarkable one and two point perspective drawings of Mrs. Simon's art classes, read the perfect attendance lists and learn about upcoming events at SOIT.
Near the artworks is a text that explains the discovery of perspective drawing by artist/architect Brunelleschi in the Renaissance linking the arts with math and science. "Nearly every Renaissance artist wanted linear perspective—a way of creating an accurate illusion of space that could match the new naturalism then being applied to human figure." http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/Brunelleschi.html
In addition, vocabulary strips made by students adorn the art works, using content vocabulary from art, math and science classes. These same vocabulary strips have also formed a new art/science display case in the science wing of SOIT. LINK
